Homeschooling Laws – What You Should Know

Thursday, May 27th, 2010

Your legal situation as a homeschooler depends largely on what state you live in and how state and local officials enforce the laws concerning compulsory attendance, private education, and homeschooling. Whether they require registration, a notice of intent, regular evaluation, or advance approval, the statutes take in your state can be less important than how they are enforced.

To keep your homeschooling legal worries to the minimal level they deserve, here are some things which you should bear in mind:

1. Know what your state’s law says. Read the applicable statutes for yourself, talk to other homeschoolers, and join a state homeschooling organization that monitors the regulations affecting homeschoolers.

2. Learn what potential problems for homeschoolers exist in your state. Learn how other homeschoolers have dealt with them successfully, and plan how you’d respond if faced with them yourself. Don’t wait until after the fact to learn what your options could have been.

Hurricane Season 2006: Four Steps To An Efficient Evacuation.

Wednesday, May 26th, 2010

It’s hard to believe it’s already hurricane season, and it’s also hard to believe that this season is projected to be as bad as or worse than last year’s season that saw hurricanes Katrina, Rita, and Wilma. We’re here to help you prepare, but rather than repeat the usual “flashlight and first aid kit” disaster preparedness checklist, we’re going to give you a few details that will help your family plan an efficient evacuation should a severe hurricane threaten your area.

One of the most crucial assets in any emergency situation is time, and nowhere is time more important than in an evacuation. When the evacuation order is given, all you want to have to do is go. A safe and speedy evacuation does two things. First, it gets you and yours out of the way before the massive traffic gridlock takes place, and two, if enough people evacuated earlier, this gridlock won’t be as bad for the people who did not prepare as they should have.

Let’s look at a few ideas that will save you considerable time in an evacuation scenario and help keep your family safe. Going with that theme, let’s use the word S.A.F.E. to cover these hurricane preparedness topics, namely Shutters, Accessories, Fuel, and Evacuation.

1. Shutters. Get your shutter materials today. If you plan to protect your windows and doors before you evacuate, get the materials you need now, and prep so you can put these shutters up by yourself. For example, if plywood is your choice material, you should already have it on your property somewhere and cut (for fit and manageability) and labeled as to which opening it covers. Have small hooks over each window and corresponding holes in the plywood so you can hang the shutter in place by yourself while you drill in the screws. During an emergency, you shouldn’t waste time and money gathering materials you should already have, and you don’t want to tie up other people performing chores that could be done by one person.

Tuesday, May 25th, 2010

The advancement of technology has opened up a lot of new opportunities for people all over the world. In the field of education, many top colleges and universities in the country today has opened their doors to students who want to study online. Many of these colleges and universities are now offering accredited online college degree to students from all over the world. One still needs to go through the usual application and student selection process of these top colleges and universities to be able to enroll in their accredited online college degrees. However. the fact that one can now study in the comforts of his or her home is already a huge advantage. This is especially true for students who are living in far away areas and could afford to relocate near the college or university.

If you are accepted to an accredited online college degree of a college or university in the country, you are eligible to apply for study grants and financial assistance. Note that just because you are studying online does not mean that you are not considered as a regular student of the college or university so you can still make use of whatever study grants and student financial assistance available. Since most colleges and universities now offer online applications for student grants and financial assistance, you do not need to visit the campus to apply for these student assistance programs. All you need to do is go online and log-in to the college or university’s website and go to the page for student financial assistance. Use your student number to apply for student grants and financial assistance. Your application will now be processed by the college and university.

Since you are enrolled in accredited online college degree program of the college or university, the amount of financial assistance that you can get may vary from the assistance given to students who are studying in campus. In most cases, students that are enrolled in accredited online college degree programs get a fraction of the financial assistance given to students who are studying in campus. The reason behind the diminution in the amount of assistance that you can get is that since you are not living and studying in campus, you are supposed to incur lesser amount of expenses compared to those students that are living and studying in campus. However, the good news is that you will still enjoy the same rate of interest and payment schemes for student loans enjoyed by those students who are living and studying on campus.

Grameen Shakti and the Solar Revolution

Monday, May 24th, 2010

Grameen Shakti is a renewable energy resources company based out of Bangladesh. They are a part of the Grameen family of companies, which has been working for decades to alleviate the burdens of poverty in developing countries. The Grameen Bank, one of their founding companies, has become world-renowned for their charitable work and for helping to establish groundbreaking programs focused on the needs of people.

In recent years, the Grameen Bank has financed and supported a number of projects aimed at removing social and financial barriers and creating opportunities for those less fortunate. Grameen Telecom is one such example. The central aim of this company is to provide collateral-free loans to rural villagers for use in establishing local communications networks. This model has become known as the Village Phone.

They have now committed significant resources to sustainable energy development. The cornerstone of this effort is the Photovoltaic Program. In Bangladesh, only 30% of the population is receiving energy from the electrical power grid. In this developing nation, the infrastructure to provide energy to every household simply doesn’t exist. In an effort to address this problem, Grameen Shakti has financed the installation of thousands of solar energy systems in rural communities.

This has created immense opportunities for people in rural villages. Children now have the ability to pursue their studies long after the sun has gone down. Businesses now have the ability to operate beyond their traditional work hours, thus increasing productivity and sales. A world of opportunity has opened up for an entire generation of rural villagers. As a consequence, they are no longer rural villagers. They are now members of our global village.
